"The Rainbow Orchid" is an ambitious blend of classic storytelling and cinematic artwork in which adventure, historical drama and legend are seamlessly intertwined. In Volume One, follow the story's hero, Julius Chancer, as he embarks on a hazardous quest for the rainbow orchid - a mythical flower last mentioned by the ancient Greek philosopher, Theophrastus, and steeped in legend. His epic journey takes him from 1920s Britain to the Indian subcontinent and its mysterious lost valleys." Garen Ewing has managed to capture the spirit of old shows and books like ‘Dick Barton, Special Agent’ and ‘Tin Tin’. His artwork is beautiful and storytelling masterful. The story zips along at just the right pace and you find yourself routing for Julius Chancer all the way through. Ewing proves that there is a place for action adventure that doesn’t rely on profanity and excessive, just good old fashioned storytelling and suspense. When I finished the first book I was glad I had the second waiting for me, I was totally captivated and keen to continue reading. It was a joy to just to lose myself in the pages, but this is a trilogy and book 3 has yet to be released. As I worked my way through the first two books Ewing’s artwork took me back to when I first discovered comics. It is so beautifully put together and yet simple in its construction, the pastel colours enhance the inking instead of detracting or overwhelming. Take my advice and buy these books for somebody you love, like or want to know better because if you do and they like The Rainbow Orchid then they have great taste. If they don’t? Cross them off your Christmas card list, change the locks and delete your number. |
